Ages of Man (I-III), tempera on panel, 2022, varying dimensions
The series Ages of Man (I-III) is the artist’s first exploration using egg tempera as the sole artistic medium. In this manner, the artist fuses traditional practices with contemporary imagery. In each scene, three figures represent the three stages of “Man” (in a symbolic sense) throughout their lives. These scenes capture the circularity and randomness of life and our experiences. The characters are not naturalistic, and although they are cast with ridiculous countenances, they are relatable on an emotional, incorporeal, level.
Ultimately, this work was inspired by Robert Hughes quoting Patrick White: (paraphrase) ‘All tragedy wears a rubber nose’.
